Maharashtra floods: Situation becoming normal in Kohlapur and Sangli

The situation in Kohlapur and Sangli districts of Maharashtra is coming back to normal after days of floods, according to news agency ANI. The Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) has announced that a total of 21 Relief Teams which were providing assistance to the flood-affected persons of Kohlapur and Sangli in Maharashtra are being de-requisitioned as the situation is coming back to normal.

On the other hand, 48 Relief Teams continue to provide flood relief in Karnataka as the situation is steadily improving.

In Kerala, 34 Relief Teams have been employed for flood relief in Allepy, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kozhikodu districts.

Kolhapur and Sangli districts have been battling unprecedented floods since the last eight days following heavy rains in Konkan and western parts of the state where 40 people have lost their lives in the deluge.

Nearly 4.48 lakh people were so far evacuated from flood-hit areas across the state, including 4.04 lakh from Kolhapur and Sangli. They were shifted to 372 temporary camps and shelters, a senior state official said on August 11.

Rescuers, including the NDRF and military personnel, received kudos from locals for the relief work.

Some women and girls tied 'rakhis' on the wrists of jawans of the Navy, Army, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on August 11.

Several members of the Muslim community from Sangli and Kolhapur decided to celebrate the festival of Eid al-Adha on August 12 without fanfare.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on August 11 said each flood-hit family in the state will be given ₹5,000 cash while rest of the financial assistance will be deposited in their respective bank accounts.
