According to the 2019 Philips Global Sleep Survey, 68 percent Indias feel they get enough sleep each night as opposed to only 54 percent in the US which is ranked fifth in the survey. Saudi Arabia is in the second position with 61 percent people saying they sleep enough. Serbia with 60 percent and China with 57 percent hold third and fourth position respectively. The survey was answered by over 11,000 adults from 12 countries.

Sleep plays a vital role in the overall health and well being of a human being. Poor sleep not only makes a person more vulnerable to gain weight but also increases the chances of heart diseases. If one is not getting good quality sleep for enough hours, he or she is likely to have a headache the next day that can adversely affect the productivity of a person at work too.

With the rapid globalization and the ever-increasing speed in every sphere of life, the lifestyle of a regular working person has also become very fast-paced and a little disorganized. Today, a working professional is often required to work in different shifts on different days that is likely to disrupt the sleeping pattern, as well as the quality of the sleep of that person and hence, might take a toll on the person's health.

More than 40 percent of adults across the world feel their sleep has gotten worse in the past five years as opposed to only 26 percent who think their sleep quality has improved in the last five years.

Despite being aware of the importance of good quality sleep for maintaining overall health more than half of the adults are not able to sleep well. Only 10 percent of the respondent said they sleep extremely well.

It is recommended to have an eight-hour sleep each night but on an average, adults across the globe sleep only for 6.8 hours on weekdays. They try to make up for it by sleeping for longer hours on the weekend which is not such a good strategy.
