The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has started strengthening its healthcare infrastructure in anticipation of a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic The municipality is working on increasing bed capacity to 200 at its three hospitals and will also set up three 400 liters per minute capacity oxygen plants, according to officials.
''We have completed preparations at the Tilak Nagar super-specialty hospital where we have dedicated a 100-bed ward for Covid patients. Out of this, eight will be ICU beds. We have also completed the installation of a 400 liter per minute capacity oxygen plant at the hospital,'' a senior SDMC official, privy to the development, said.
The SDMC will set up a 50-bed facility at its Kalkaji hospital along with an oxygen plant of 400 liters per minute capacity and develop another 50-bed Covid care center at its Nehru Nagar hospital along with an oxygen plant.
''All these beds will have oxygen support. In the second wave, our resources were pushed to the limit and the city encountered an unprecedented oxygen crisis. So, now we aim to make our hospitals independent in terms of oxygen availability during the third wave," the official said.
Officials said that the installation of the Tilak Nagar oxygen plant has been completed and it is ready to be used.
Similarly, the south civic body also has plans to set up dedicated child Covid care facilities.
''We are planning to create a dedicated child Covid care facility at our Tilak Nagar hospital. It will have oxygen beds and NICU beds dedicated to children. The number of beds to be reserved for child Covid care is yet to be decided,'' an SDMC official said.
