More people should be persuaded to donate organs, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said on Monday while on a visit to a rail hospital here.

Inspecting the Northern Railway Central Hospital, he said awareness about organ donation should be created in the country.

"More and more people should be persuaded to donate their organs and their bodies. Counselling sessions can be arranged to create awareness about the significance of this noble work," said Goyal, who himself is a registered organ donor.

He also directed the railway administration to prepare a comprehensive plan for upgrading all railway hospitals across the country to the level of best medical facilities in the country.

The minister asked railway doctors to visit some outstanding hospitals both in the corporate and government sector to gain first-hand experience about how things work there.

Goyal instructed officials to conduct on the spot study of these facilities and replicate their best features in railway hospitals in a time-bound manner.

He also went around various wards and spoke to patients and their relatives about the care being provided there.

"Being the head of a family of 13 lakh railway employees, it is my duty to see to it that they are taken care of," Goyal said.
