Illicit Arrack Tragedy in Kallakurichi: 34 Dead, Families Wail

A tragic incident in Kallakurichi, caused by methanol-laced illicit arrack, led to the deaths of at least 34 people and left many children orphaned. The entire Karunapuram locality in Kallakurichi reverberated with the sorrowful cries of families affected by the illicit arrack tragedy that claimed at least 34 lives, leaving numerous children orphaned.

Following the heartbreaking incident in the state’s northern district, 100 others are receiving medical treatment in various hospitals, authorities confirmed.

Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed profound anguish over the incident and revealed that the deaths were caused by methanol-laced arrack. He assured special care for those hospitalized and announced the setting up of a commission led by retired Madras High Court Judge B Gokuldas to recommend measures to prevent recurrence and understand the root causes.
