A 55-year-old American tourist died after falling ill during an excursion on the southern side of Mount Etna, Sicily, the country's alpine rescue service reported Friday.

The exact cause of the illness remains unknown, but rescuers highlighted the dangerous combination of high temperatures and humidity that can impact unprepared tourists.

After a distress call on Thursday afternoon, the alpine rescue team and an air ambulance reached the man in a remote location, but revival attempts failed. He was declared dead at the scene and later moved to a hospital mortuary.

“Tourists should not underestimate the dangers of high temperatures, strong humidity, and the quick altitude changes,” warned Alfio Ferrara, spokesman for the alpine rescue service.

Ferrara noted that many tourists embark on treks reaching elevations of 2,000 to 2,300 meters after a day at the beach, unaccustomed to such conditions.

On Thursday, temperatures on Mount Etna ranged from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Italian authorities had issued a red weather alert for seven cities, primarily in central Italy.

Both healthy individuals and those with preexisting conditions could be affected by the heat and humidity, officials cautioned.

Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, has experienced a spike in activity over the past week.
