Resident doctors at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Delhi have launched an indefinite strike starting Monday, citing safety concerns after a patient was brazenly killed inside a hospital ward.
The strike follows the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old patient named Riyazuddin within ward number 24 on Sunday. The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) initiated the strike at 9 a.m., while emergency services remain operational, according to RDA president Nitesh Kumar. The RDA has long demanded better security, a request that has, according to them, been ignored by the Delhi government.
'Our repeated appeals for enhanced security have been ignored, culminating in this tragic event,' an RDA spokesperson stated. 'The strike will continue until fundamental improvements in security are effectively implemented and communicated.'
The lethal incident in the hospital ward has been condemned by various doctors' associations. Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj assured a comprehensive security review, saying, 'No negligence will be tolerated.' The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called the incident a 'mafia-like killing,' stressing the urgent need for enhanced doctor security, according to FORDA president Aviral Mathur.
