An international study has found that India saw 11.9 lakh excess deaths in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, representing a 17% increase compared to 2019. This number is substantially higher, about eight times more, than the official COVID-19 death count reported in India.

Using data collected from over 7.65 lakh individuals, researchers, including those from the University of Oxford, UK, evaluated changes in life expectancy between 2019 and 2020. Women experienced a life expectancy decline of 3.1 years, while men saw a 2.1-year decline. The study pointed out that gender inequalities and disparities within households could be likely reasons for this trend.

The study also highlighted that marginalized caste and religious groups, such as Muslims and Scheduled Tribes, faced the most significant drops in life expectancy. The pandemic aggravated pre-existing disparities, with excess deaths notably affecting both the youngest and the oldest age groups. Lockdowns and deteriorating economic conditions contributed to this increased mortality.
