At least five districts in southern West Bengal have experienced a significant rise in dengue cases, with each district reporting over 100 cases by July 20, according to an official statement on Tuesday. North 24 Parganas leads with 268 cases.
Other affected districts in southern Bengal include Murshidabad with 224 cases, Hooghly with 181, and Kolkata with 152. Northern Bengal's Malda district has also seen around 230 cases.
Despite the surge, a senior state health department official assured the public that the situation remains under control. 'The dengue situation in West Bengal is not alarming. This disease has a seasonal pattern,' he noted. 'This year, the number of dengue cases is comparatively low.'
The official attributed the recent increase to rainwater accumulation, but highlighted proactive measures taken by civic bodies, including garbage removal and stagnant water management, which kept the infection rates low from January to June.
