The Jharkhand High Court has issued a stern rebuke to the state government, citing its inability to provide sufficient infrastructure at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi.
The court asserted that if the government cannot furnish the necessary facilities and equipment at RIMS, it should consider closing the institute down.
A division bench emphasized that the government's repeated failures cast doubt on its commitments, based on recent affidavits which paint an overly optimistic, almost foreign, picture.
Due to inadequate facilities at RIMS, patients are forced to seek care in private hospitals, many of which lack proper licenses under the Clinical Establishment Act, the court noted.
Criticizing these private institutions, the bench remarked that they seem more interested in 'wealth care' than real healthcare.
The court has ordered the state government to submit an updated status report outlining actions against unlicensed hospitals and nursing homes within a fortnight.
This case arose from a public interest litigation filed by Jyoti Sharma, drawing attention to infrastructure deficiencies at RIMS, an autonomous institute under the Jharkhand government.
