Burundi Reports Mpox Cases in Commercial Capital

Burundi's health ministry has confirmed three mpox cases in Bujumbura and Isare. The World Health Organization aided in testing. Infected individuals are in treatment and improving, with contact tracing underway. Although the mpox variant is unspecified, the virus, spread through close contact, remains a public health threat.

Burundi's health ministry has announced three confirmed cases of mpox in its commercial capital, Bujumbura, and the nearby town of Isare. These cases were verified through local laboratory tests and the World Health Organization's intervention, according to Health Minister Lydwine Baradahana.

The patients are reportedly responding well to treatment, and contact tracing efforts are already in progress. 'The health ministry reassures the Burundian population that all measures have been taken to deal with this disease,' Baradahana stated.

Though the specific variant of the mpox virus has not been disclosed, the virus is known to cause flu-like symptoms and a painful rash, spreading through close contact. While most cases are mild, the virus can be fatal. A milder variant, clade IIb, spread globally in 2022, leading the WHO to declare a public health emergency, which has since been lifted.
