The government on Friday confirmed a stringent examination system for medicines, addressing concerns about the quality of some cough syrups exported to Africa.

Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers J P Nadda assured the Lok Sabha of the government's vigilance in ensuring high quality for medicines, committing to preventing such incidents in the future.

Responding to Congress member Gaurav Gogoi, Nadda highlighted that India produces some of the world's most effective and affordable medicines. Speaker Om Birla also emphasized global demand for India's pharmaceutical products.

Nadda also mentioned a formal complaint against an official for using improper language in an email to pharma associations, leading to departmental proceedings against the officer.

The Minister noted the Revamped Pharmaceuticals Technology Upgradation Scheme aims to align India's pharmaceutical production with global standards, with over 100 applications received since April 2024.
