India Achieves Landmark in Organ Transplants: Triple Increase in Decade
Organ transplants in India have tripled over the past decade, with a total of 18,378 transplants in 2023, according to a report by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO). Kidney transplants made up the majority, and deceased organ donations surpassed 1,000 for the first time.

Organ transplants in India have surged significantly, tripling over the past decade, according to an annual report from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) released on Saturday.
India conducted 18,378 organ transplants in 2023, ranking third globally in organ transplants and second in corneal transplants. Kidney transplants constituted the majority, with 13,426 procedures performed this year.
Deceased organ donations also reached a milestone, surpassing 1,000 for the first time. Of 2023's total transplants, 15,436 came from living donors and 1,099 from deceased donors. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare continues efforts to promote organ donation and streamline the transplantation process.
