Microplastics Found in All Indian Salt and Sugar Brands: Study

A study by Toxics Link reveals the presence of microplastics in all Indian salt and sugar brands. Researchers tested various types and found microplastics ranging from 0.1 mm to 5 mm. The findings show concerning levels, calling for urgent research into the health impacts and policy action to minimize risks.

All Indian salt and sugar brands, whether big or small, packaged or unpackaged, contain microplastics, according to a study published on Tuesday.

The study conducted by environmental research organization Toxics Link tested 10 types of salt and five types of sugar from both online and local markets. It revealed that all samples contained microplastics in various forms, including fibre, pellets, films, and fragments, with sizes ranging from 0.1 mm to 5 mm. The highest levels were found in iodised salt.

The study aims to contribute to the scientific database on microplastics and trigger policy action. Toxics Link's findings call for urgent, comprehensive research into the long-term health impacts of microplastics. Microplastics' harmful effects on health and the environment are a growing global concern, as they can enter the human body through food, water, and air.
