Resident doctors at government hospitals nationwide began a strike following the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee in Kolkata. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) called the indefinite strike, heavily impacting hospital services. However, assurances from Union Health Minister J P Nadda have led to the strike's end from Wednesday morning.
A delegation from FORDA met with Nadda, who agreed to form a committee involving FORDA to work on the Central Protection Act. West Bengal, the epicenter of the protest, saw severe disruptions in state healthcare services. The Calcutta High Court has handed the investigation to the CBI, urging doctors to resume work, stressing the obligation to treat patients.
The incident took place at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, leaving the medical community outraged. The National Medical Commission issued an advisory for safer work environments at medical colleges. While emergency services continue, the strike highlights the urgent need for improved security and working conditions for healthcare professionals.
