ECDC Raises Mpox Risk Level Amid New Outbreak

The ECDC has raised its risk level for mpox following new outbreaks outside Africa, including Europe. The WHO has declared mpox a global public health emergency and is holding an emergency meeting. Mpox, which causes pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, is spreading in different strains, posing increased risks.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) raised its risk level for mpox, following the confirmation of a new strain outside Africa, in Sweden, on Friday. The EU public health body's head, Pamela Rendi Wagner, stated that more imported cases are expected in the coming weeks, although the risk of sustained transmission remains low.

The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared mpox a global public health emergency after an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo spread to neighboring countries. The WHO is set to host an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss global access to tests, treatments, and vaccines for the virus.

Mpox, a viral infection causing pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, usually remains mild but can be fatal. The virus has two spreading strains: the endemic clade I and the new clade Ib. The ECDC increased its risk level for sporadic EU cases to 'moderate' from 'low,' and countries are advised to maintain high levels of awareness among travelers from affected areas.
