Natco Pharma Ltd announced on Wednesday that its Canadian subsidiary has invested USD 8 million in US biotechnology firm eGenesis, Inc.

The investment, made by Natco Pharma (Canada) Inc., aims to support eGenesis's groundbreaking work in xenotransplantation, which focuses on developing human-compatible organs for transplant. The company aims to tackle the global shortage of transplantable organs, Natco Pharma said in a filing.

"We align with eGenesis's vision that xenotransplantation technology holds the potential to end the global transplant shortage and revolutionize organ failure treatment by eliminating mortality on transplant waitlists," stated Rajeev Nannapaneni, Vice Chairman and CEO of Natco Pharma.

Xenotransplantation involves the use of non-human cells, tissues, or organs to treat human medical conditions. In March 2024, eGenesis announced the successful transplantation of a porcine kidney into a living patient, a procedure authorized by the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA).

eGenesis, Inc. CEO Mike Curtis commented on the partnership, saying, "Natco's support will be instrumental in advancing our research and bringing our groundbreaking therapies to market."
