In a significant policy shift, the Union Cabinet has approved health coverage for all citizens aged 70 years and above under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), the world's largest publicly funded health assurance scheme. This new initiative is expected to benefit roughly six crore senior citizens across the nation, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The comprehensive Rs 5 lakh free health insurance cover will extend benefits to senior citizens from approximately 4.5 crore families. Eligible individuals will receive a new distinct card under the scheme, enhancing access to quality healthcare. The government highlighted that senior citizens already covered under AB PM-JAY will receive an additional top-up cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per year.
This landmark decision was reiterated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who emphasized the government's commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare for every Indian. As the scheme continues to expand, it aims to uphold the dignity, care, and security of senior citizens, further extending its reach to marginalized populations and ensuring improved healthcare outcomes nationwide.
