Britain’s population has surged to 68.3 million as of mid-2023, marking a 1% annual increase largely attributed to substantial immigration, according to official data released Tuesday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Net international migration was identified as the primary contributor to population growth in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The natural population change, which reflects the difference between birth and death rates, decreased by 16,300. Projections had anticipated a negative natural change by the mid-2030s, but immigration has accelerated this shift. The influx, driven by economic migrants and those using irregular routes, has sparked political debates, particularly over the pressures on public services.

The largest annual rise in population in 75 years was recorded in England and Wales, with the population surging by 610,000. This contrasts with Scotland's 0.8% growth and Northern Ireland's 0.5% increase. Changes in visa policies post-Brexit reduced European migration but increased arrivals from India, Nigeria, and Pakistan for health and social care roles. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promised a pragmatic approach to illegal migration.
