The healthcare landscape in Auckland's northern region has reached a significant milestone with the opening of the fifth and final ward of Tōtara Haumaru, the country's newest hospital facility on the North Shore Hospital campus. Health Minister Simeon Brown announced the completion, highlighting the facility's crucial role in reducing waitlists for Auckland's rapidly growing and ageing population.

Since opening on 1 July 2024, Tōtara Haumaru has made substantial strides in patient care. Over 2,500 New Zealanders have received elective surgeries at the facility, while an additional 2,500 acute and elective endoscopies have been performed, marking a strong start for the hospital's operational services.

A key benefit of the hospital is the expansion of regional services, including vascular and plastic surgery, enabling local patients to undergo procedures closer to home. Additionally, the facility has advanced regional robotically-assisted surgeries, achieving a 40% reduction in patient length of stay, fewer complications, and quicker recoveries.

The newly opened fifth ward increases capacity for women's health and gynaecology services, expanding from 15 to 20 patients and enhancing care in a modernized environment.

Minister Brown emphasized the Government's commitment to timely and quality healthcare for all New Zealanders. The Government has reinstated five key health targets, including ensuring 95% of patients receive a first specialist assessment and elective treatment within four months by 2030.

While acknowledging the progress needed to meet these targets, Minister Brown expressed confidence that Tōtara Haumaru will continue to make a vital contribution to reducing waitlists and improving patient outcomes. As theatre capacity and resources scale up, the number of patients benefiting from this state-of-the-art facility is set to grow.

"My focus as Minister of Health is on improving patient outcomes and ensuring access to timely, quality healthcare. Reducing waitlists and providing shorter wait times for appointments and surgeries is a key part of that commitment," Mr. Brown stated.
