A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday for the implementation of a comprehensive sickle cell anaemia screening project in Jharkhand, according to a statement. This significant collaboration involves the Tata Steel Foundation (TSF), the National Health Mission (NHM) Jharkhand, and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CSIR-CCMB) in Hyderabad.
The MoU, witnessed by Ajoy Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of Health, outlines a strategic initiative aimed at facilitating large-scale community-based screening and raising awareness about sickle cell anaemia in Jharkhand. This blood disorder is characterized by the transformation of red blood cells into a rigid, sickle shape, posing health challenges for those affected.
Under this collaborative effort, a sickle cell testing hub will be established at the district hospital in Khasmahal, East Singhbhum. The infrastructure will support extensive screening efforts targeted at individuals under 40 across Jharkhand’s Kolhan region, covering East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts. Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services at Tata Steel, expressed optimism about the partnership's potential to address this congenital issue and build trust with local communities.
