The issue of stray dog bites has reached a critical point in Mumbai, with more than 1.28 lakh cases recorded in 2024. This alarming statistic was revealed by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in a legislative council session.

In response to the growing menace, authorities have launched various initiatives such as sterilisation and vaccination programs, aimed at managing the population of stray dogs. Despite efforts, the problem persists, with over 9,400 bites reported in Nagpur.

An independent portal has been developed for residents to report and resolve issues with stray dogs. Land is also being surveyed for the construction of shelters for aggressive and rabid dogs, as the state grapples with daily incidents averaging 1,369 across Maharashtra.
