A troubling trend is emerging among school-going children, as they increasingly fall prey to drug and smoking habits, often coupled with alcohol consumption, a study by AIIMS-Delhi warns.
The survey, which spanned 10 Indian cities and included nearly 6,000 students, found the average age of first exposure to such substances to be around 13 years. The study underscores the urgent need for preventive measures starting in primary schools.
Dr. Anju Dhawan's research highlights the ease of access to harmful substances for minors, and the findings call for comprehensive interventions throughout middle and high school, aimed at addressing the rising substance use rates.
