Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has acknowledged the persistence of female foeticide in the state. Speaking on Tuesday, he announced government initiatives aimed at eradicating this social evil by appointing nodal officers across districts and tightening enforcement measures.

Rao highlighted the disturbing disparity in the sex ratio and noted that abortions often occur voluntarily due to preferences against female children. He identified illegal sex determinations using portable ultrasound technology as a key concern and promised to alert central authorities about the issue.

Intelligence reports have indicated anomalies in certain districts, prompting the government to conduct decoy operations and tackle networks involved in these illegal practices. Additionally, Rao stressed the importance of strengthening and enforcing legislation to prevent misuse of advanced technology and medications for sex-selective abortions.
