A landmark medical procedure has been carried out in Barcelona, where a donor's face was donated prior to undergoing an assisted dying procedure, setting a world first for facial transplants. Vall d'Hebron hospital announced that around 100 experts, including psychiatrists and immunologists, participated in the surgery.
The donor's selfless decision was described by the hospital's transplant coordinator, Elisabeth Navas, as being exceptionally mature. Donor and recipient compatibility requirements are rigorous, involving matching sex, blood group, and head size for facial transplants.
The recipient, identified only as Carme, faced debilitating facial tissue necrosis from a bacterial infection. Her recovery is progressing well, allowing her to start regaining her identity. Spain, a leader in organ transplants, continues its medical advances, facilitated by its legalisation of euthanasia in 2021.
