Crackdown on Non-compliant Organ Transplant Centers: 217 Hospitals Under Scrutiny

In a move to enhance transparency and accountability among healthcare institutions, 217 out of 804 registered hospitals have been highlighted for their failure to report data on the National Registry Portal. This issue, slated for action by respective state governments, was addressed by Minister of State for Health, Prataprao Jadhav, during a session at the Rajya Sabha.

Minister Jadhav emphasized that the registration of hospitals for organ transplantations is managed by relevant state and UT authorities, with actions governed under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Registry Portal, operational since 2015, plays a pivotal role in this regulatory framework.

As of March 2026, the national waitlist for major organs stands at 89,839, with 20,019 transplants conducted in 2025. The Centre's National Organ Transplant Programme aims to bolster infrastructure and awareness, enhancing organ donation services via Regional and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organizations across the country.
