Hantavirus Outbreak Shadows Luxury Antarctic Cruise
A hantavirus outbreak has struck a luxury cruise ship off West Africa, resulting in three fatalities and several illnesses among passengers. The vessel, carrying mostly British, American, and Spanish tourists, is being managed with stringent containment efforts. Health officials emphasize low public risk, urging calm and supportive care.
Medics rushed into action on a cruise ship off the coast of West Africa after an outbreak of the deadly hantavirus was suspected. Two passengers with symptoms were evacuated as fears mounted following the deaths of three individuals onboard, including a Dutch couple and a German national.
The vessel, hosting around 150 people, was held as officials sought answers. The Netherlands' National Institute for Public Health confirmed the presence of hantavirus in a Dutch patient. Although its spread between humans is rare, uncertainty remains about other affected passengers.
Hantavirus, primarily transmitted through airborne particles from rodent excretions, presents significant health challenges with no specific drugs available. Authorities, including the WHO, continue to assure low risk to the wider public while racing to manage the situation and repatriate affected individuals.
