Italian Parents Face Off Against Social Media Giants in Court
An Italian parents' group, MOIGE, and several families have initiated a lawsuit against Meta and TikTok, seeking to enforce stronger age-verification and transparency on social media platforms to protect minors. The case highlights concerns over children's safety and potential harms from platform algorithms.
In a legal showdown in Milan, Italian parents and the movement MOIGE are challenging social media giants Meta and TikTok over minors' access to social platforms. The lawsuit demands stricter age-verification measures and algorithm transparency to protect children under 14.
MOIGE contends that about 3.5 million Italian children are on these platforms illegally. The group aims for the removal of manipulative algorithms and better information on the risks associated with excessive social media use.
Despite ongoing litigation, TikTok maintains it follows strict Community Guidelines and has effective content moderation systems. Meanwhile, both Meta and TikTok argue against Italian jurisdiction in the case. Amidst growing international scrutiny, the European Commission plans to act against addictive platform practices.
