Antidepressants in Pregnancy: Safe for Child Development

Recent research from a University of Hong Kong-led study indicates that taking antidepressants during pregnancy does not elevate the risk of developmental disorders such as autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. This concludes based on data from over 25 million pregnancies, countering claims made by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. without substantiating evidence.

The study, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, analyzed nearly 650,000 pregnancies involving antidepressant use and 25 million pregnancies without such exposure. Findings show a slight uptick in autism and ADHD diagnoses among children of mothers who took antidepressants. However, when factors like mental health, genetics, and family history were considered, these associations dwindled.

Moreover, similar developmental risks were observed for children whose fathers used antidepressants or whose mothers used them before pregnancy, indicating shared family traits rather than medication use during pregnancy might explain the risk. Researchers emphasize that antidepressants should not be discontinued during pregnancy based on inconsistent reports since maternal mental health is crucial for both mother and child.
