Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak Spurs Rigorous Quarantine in Australia

Six passengers from a cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak arrived in Australia for a quarantine. They will undergo a three-week isolation period at Bullsbrook facility, with stringent measures enforced by the government to prevent any viral transmission. The outbreak on the MV Hondius ship resulted in three deaths.

A Gulfstream jet arrived in Australia on Friday, carrying six passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship, which had a confirmed hantavirus outbreak. The travelers, from the Netherlands, will begin a three-week quarantine at the Bullsbrook facility near Perth.

Australian Health Minister Mark Butler emphasized that the nation is implementing one of the world's toughest responses to the outbreak to eliminate any transmission risk to the local community. The luxurious ship was on a route from Argentina through the South Atlantic when the outbreak was identified.

Three of the 11 confirmed cases from the ship, which included a total of 11 infected, have succumbed to the virus. The MV Hondius has ended its voyage prematurely, returning to the Netherlands for disinfection.
