The West Coast is set to become home to the South Island's first Rural Training Hub, a major step toward training more doctors, nurses and midwives in rural communities where healthcare workers are often hardest to recruit and retain.

Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey announced the new hub, saying it reflects the Government's commitment to improving healthcare access for people living outside major urban centres. Around one in five New Zealanders lives in a rural area, yet many communities continue to face challenges attracting and keeping healthcare professionals. The hub is expected to help address those shortages by creating stronger local training opportunities and encouraging more healthcare workers to build their careers in rural regions.

Training Locally to Meet Local Needs

Health leaders have recognised that students who train in rural communities are far more likely to stay and work there after completing their qualifications. The new training hub is designed around that principle, providing students with clinical placements and practical experience in the communities they may eventually serve.

The South Island hub follows the establishment of similar facilities in South Taranaki and Wairoa District and forms part of a wider national programme aimed at strengthening New Zealand's rural health workforce. Students will receive support throughout their training journey, helping them transition from study into frontline healthcare roles. The programme will also focus on pastoral care, making it easier for trainees to succeed while living and learning in rural settings.

Building on the West Coast's Rural Health Expertise

The West Coast has developed a strong reputation for rural generalist healthcare, where professionals are trained to provide a broad range of services in communities with limited access to specialist care. The new hub builds on that experience and positions the region as a leader in rural workforce development.

A dedicated Programme Lead will be based on the Coast and will work with healthcare providers, education organisations and community partners across the South Island. Their role will include developing training opportunities, strengthening education pathways and ensuring workforce planning reflects the needs of local communities. Supporters of the initiative believe it will create a stronger connection between undergraduate and postgraduate training while exposing more students to the rewards and opportunities of rural healthcare careers.
