FDA Launches Controversial Abortion Pill Safety Study Amid Political Tensions
The FDA has initiated a safety study on the abortion pill mifepristone, sparking political debate. The ongoing review, supported by the White House, aims to withstand legal scrutiny. Critics, including Planned Parenthood, view it as politically driven. Mifepristone, part of a two-drug regimen, remains a contentious topic post-2022 Roe ruling.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has started a safety study of mifepristone, an abortion pill that has raised political tensions. The Wall Street Journal reported that this move might prompt changes in distribution regulations under the Trump administration.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services emphasized the study's ongoing nature, contradicting claims of a newly launched review. They stated the agency has been conducting a comprehensive safety assessment of the mifepristone Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS).
President Alexis McGill Johnson of Planned Parenthood Action Fund criticized the study as a "politically motivated farce." Mifepristone, used in two-thirds of U.S. abortions, remains a focal point in the debate over abortion rights, especially following the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
