Ebola Outbreak Escalates: 71 New Cases in One Day in DRC
The Democratic Republic of Congo reported 71 new Ebola cases in a single day, raising concerns of rapid community transmission. To date, 452 cases have been confirmed, predominantly in northeast Congo's Ituri province. WHO is spearheading a $518 million plan to combat this significant outbreak.
On Friday, the Democratic Republic of Congo confirmed 71 new cases of Ebola within 24 hours, indicating a concerning uptick in the community transmission of this deadly virus.
According to a report from the health ministry, the total number of confirmed cases has risen to 452 since the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola was declared on May 15. The disease has claimed 82 lives thus far, predominantly hitting the Ituri province—a region plagued by infrastructural challenges and armed conflict.
Seventeen of Ituri's 36 health zones and several zones in neighboring North Kivu and South Kivu provinces are affected, with additional cases in Uganda. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has announced a $518 million strategy, aiming at controlling the outbreak and preparing neighboring nations with enhanced measures including border screenings.
