The Ministry of Ayush has officially launched the countdown to the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) with a curtain raiser event held at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. The celebrations will reach their peak on June 21, 2026, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi leads the national observance at Kolkata's historic Red Road in West Bengal.

Addressing the media, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, announced that the theme for this year's International Day of Yoga is "Yoga for Healthy Ageing" (स्वस्थ आयु के लिए योग). The theme highlights the growing need for people to maintain good physical and mental health as life expectancy continues to rise across the world.

Speaking about the significance of the theme, Jadhav said that living longer should also mean living healthier, staying active, and maintaining independence throughout later years. He noted that yoga provides a holistic approach that supports physical fitness, emotional balance, and overall well-being, making it an effective practice for healthy ageing.

The minister also reflected on yoga's remarkable global journey since India proposed the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations in 2014. What began as a traditional Indian practice has evolved into a worldwide movement embraced across cultures and continents for its health and wellness benefits.

This year, the Ministry of Ayush, in partnership with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), is planning yoga events at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide through more than 210 Indian Missions abroad. The large-scale participation reflects yoga's growing relevance in addressing modern lifestyle and health challenges.

Ahead of the main celebrations, the ministry achieved a major milestone on June 14 when over four lakh people participated simultaneously in a nationwide live yoga session. The event created a new Guinness World Record, showcasing the increasing enthusiasm for yoga among people from different age groups and regions.

The Ministry of Culture will also organise special yoga programmes at 100 iconic locations across India. The initiative aims to connect the country's cultural heritage with its wellness traditions, creating a unique experience that blends history, culture, and health.

Several countdown events have already been organised across the country, including programmes in New Delhi, Maharashtra's Lonar, Hyderabad's Kanha Shanti Vanam, and Khajuraho. Another major initiative, the "Gangotri to Gangasagar: Ganga Tat Yoga Yatra," is currently underway, linking yoga with environmental awareness, river conservation, and community engagement through a series of events along the Ganga.

Kolkata will host additional programmes before the main event. On June 19, the city will stage "Doud se Dhyan," highlighting the connection between physical activity and mental wellness. Celebrations on June 20, including "Vande Yogam" and West Bengal Day observances, will bring together yoga, patriotism, and cultural traditions.

The curtain raiser concluded with an interactive session where ministry officials discussed preparations for the national event, international participation, healthy ageing initiatives, and the record-breaking achievements leading up to International Day of Yoga 2026.
