Zambia: Chitalu Chilufya announces Lusaka free from cholera outbreak

Zambia’s Health Minister, Chitalu Chilufya has said that the cholera outbreak in capital city Lusaka is over. The Minister has made the announcement on March 6 at a press briefing in Lusaka stating that the capital has not recorded any new cases in the last 19 days, which gives an indication that the outbreak was over.

Zambian Minister Chitalu Chilufya elaborated that Lusaka recorded seven fresh cholera outbreaks in January and February 2019. He added that quick response from health officials averted the waterborne disease from escalating. According to him, no deaths were recorded during the current fresh outbreak.

He also thanked the Zambian health officials including other partners for quickly responding and giving all their efforts to in arresting the cholera outbreak. However, he warned that the risk still exists, hence people living in Lusaka must ensure of drinking contaminated water, eating contaminated foods and using right ways for disposal of waste.

Zambia experienced a cholera outbreak from August 2017 to June 2018 which killed 114 people and made more than 5,000 others sick.
