NATO leaders have vowed to provide Ukraine with $43 billion in military aid within the next year to enhance its defenses against Russia, which the alliance views as an escalating threat to Europe, reports Al Jazeera. The leaders also declared that Ukraine is on an "irreversible path" to joining NATO.
The decision was included in a final communique issued during a NATO summit in Washington, DC, on Wednesday. Alliance members also unveiled various individual and collective measures to boost security for both Ukraine and Europe, according to Al Jazeera.
The United States, Netherlands, and Denmark announced plans to deliver the first NATO-provided F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine's military pilots by this summer. Additionally, the US will deploy longer-range missiles in Germany by 2026, marking a significant step to counter what NATO allies describe as Russia's growing threat to Europe.
This deployment will include the most potent American weapons stationed in Europe since the Cold War, previously prohibited under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which collapsed in 2019.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude on X for NATO's efforts to enhance Ukraine's air force, stating that the new fighter jets bring "just and lasting peace closer." NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that Ukraine's membership will be formalized post-war to prevent future Russian aggression.
Stoltenberg highlighted that the assistances aim to hasten the end of the conflict. However, some US and NATO members have resisted Ukraine's immediate membership to avoid escalating tensions that could spark a major war.
They emphasized the need for Ukraine to address corruption and undertake systemic reforms. Additionally, the NATO communique took a stronger stance on China, labeling it a "decisive enabler" of Russia's war efforts in Ukraine and a systemic challenge to Euro-Atlantic security.
