Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu sent a heartfelt condolence message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi following catastrophic landslides in Wayanad District, Kerala. The disaster has claimed over 158 lives and injured many more, prompting a large-scale rescue effort.
"President Muizzu expressed profound sorrow for the unimaginable tragedy that led to extensive loss of lives and livelihoods," read a statement from the Maldives President's Office. He extended condolences on behalf of the Maldives government and its people, while expressing hopes for swift and effective rescue operations at the site.
Rescue efforts in landslide-affected Chooralmala continue robustly. Around 1200 personnel from various Indian military and rescue agencies are deployed. Brigadier Arjun Seagan of the Para Regimental Training Centre highlighted ongoing ground rescue operations involving hundreds of personnel.
Indian Army's reinforced efforts have successfully evacuated over 1,000 individuals from perilous zones. Helicopters from the Indian Air Force are also conducting search and rescue operations, despite challenging weather and visibility conditions.
The massive landslides on Tuesday morning devastated the region, isolating areas like Meppadi, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala, and causing severe infrastructural damage. Rescue and relief operations persist as communities grapple with damage to homes, roads, and an overall disruption of life.
