Muzzafarabad Faces Health Crisis Amid Sanitation Failures

Muzzafarabad, located in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, is grappling with severe health and sanitation challenges. Despite municipal elections, funding shortages have rendered sanitation departments inactive, exacerbating problems, especially during monsoon. Locals, including former assembly candidate Maulana Muhammad Altaf Butt, criticize the administration and call for improved conditions and adequate funding.

In Muzzafarabad, a region within Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), the local administration's inability to maintain adequate cleanliness is facing significant scrutiny. Despite recent municipal elections, a lack of funding has left pertinent institutions inactive, leading to severe health and sanitation issues among residents.

Former PoJK Assembly candidate Maulana Muhammad Altaf Butt has sharply criticized the dire conditions. He pointed out that during the rainy season, the proliferation of garbage exacerbates disease spread, and the two main hospitals in Muzaffarabad are currently lacking essential medicines. Butt noted, "All cities in PoJK, including Muzzafarabad, have a sanitation department, but these units are underperforming due to insufficient financial support from the PoJK administration. While promises have been made, tangible improvements remain unseen."

Addressing escalating health concerns, Butt highlighted the chronic nature of the problem. "This isn't a one-off issue for locals. Dirty surroundings lead to disease outbreaks, clogged drains, and garbage accumulation, particularly problematic during the monsoon," he stated. Butt criticized the administration’s failure to adequately compensate sanitation workers, emphasizing that only proper funding can improve the prevailing conditions, which worsen with seasonal erosion from surrounding hills.
