Iranian Army officials have refuted claims that officers from their special services played a role in the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. A lawmaker quoted by state media stated that the killing was not due to internal infiltration, as investigations continue.
Following a meeting with Iran's intelligence ministry and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Ebrahim Rezaei, the spokesman for Iran's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, reiterated that the alleged involvement of Iranian agents is unsubstantiated. A New York Times report suggested Haniyeh was killed by an explosive device smuggled into a Tehran guesthouse, a claim derived from Western and Iranian officials.
Haniyeh's assassination, which occurred during the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, is attributed to an explosive remotely detonated. Iranian authorities have accused Israel of executing the attack using a short-range projectile and have vowed retribution at an appropriate time. They also blamed the U.S. for backing the operation, with Israel neither confirming nor denying its involvement.
