India-Japan Forge Ahead: New Frameworks in Security and Tech Cooperation

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the importance of a free, open Indo-Pacific at the India-Japan 2+2 meeting. Agreements were made to develop a new security framework, enhance tech cooperation, and open an Indian consulate in Fukuoka.

During the recent 2+2 Ministerial Meeting between India and Japan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the significance of a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. Both nations agreed to coordinate their security and development assistance and committed to preparing a new framework for security cooperation.

Jaishankar announced India's plan to open a new Consulate in Fukuoka, highlighting the evolved regional and global environment since the last meeting. The two sides discussed technology, research, and industrial cooperation, stressing transparency, predictability, and resilience as pillars for security and economic stability.

Japan's Defence Minister Minoru Kihara and Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa joined Indian counterparts Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the talks. Discussions included regulatory reforms, human resource cooperation, and protection of critical information infrastructure. The meeting, described as productive and forward-looking, also underscored the importance of people-to-people engagement.
