Sardar Akhtar Mengal, leader of the Balochistan National Party (Mengal), has raised concerns over the secrecy shrouding proposed constitutional amendments, questioning both their authorship and necessity, according to reports from ARY News. Mengal expressed disbelief at the fragmented release of the drafts, describing it as unprecedented in global democratic practices.
He posed critical questions about the urgency and confidentiality of such amendments, stating that the push for a secret constitutional change overnight needs justification. Mengal distanced himself from these amendments, recalling his absence abroad when support was solicited, and noted the intimidation of two Senate members over the phone.
Meanwhile, senior lawyers in Balochistan, including prominent figures like Ali Ahmed Kurd, voiced strong opposition to the proposed 26th constitutional amendment. During a joint press conference, they threatened nationwide protests should the Shehbaz Sharif administration fail to retract its legislation. Describing the constitution as a social contract, they argued that people should have the ultimate say in any amendments, demonstrating a history of defying oppressive rule.
