Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Marseille's historical significance in India's struggle for independence during his visit to the French city. He commemorated the daring escape attempt of Veer Savarkar, an icon of India's freedom movement, remarking on the support from French activists at that time.

Modi highlighted the moment Veer Savarkar leaped into history by attempting to escape British custody while en route to India in 1910. Arrested in London under the Nasik Conspiracy Case, Savarkar's sea dive off Marseilles and subsequent capture prompted an international protest at The Hague, drawing global attention to India's freedom fighters.

In addition to historical reflections, Modi’s itinerary in Marseille included a visit to the ITER project, spotlighting nuclear fusion research, and paying respects at the Mazargues War Cemetery. Furthermore, during the India-France CEO Forum in Paris, he emphasized economic collaboration and underscored shared democratic values with France.
