Spurs' Popovich unsure about coaching in 2019-20

Approaching his 70th birthday, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich remains undecided about coaching the Spurs beyond this season.

"I don't know the answer," Popovich told The New York Times after Wednesday night's 105-101 victory against the Dallas Mavericks.

Popovich, whose birthday is Jan. 28, is in the final season of a five-year contract extension he signed after the Spurs' most recent NBA championship in 2014.

Popovich told the Times' Marc Stein he has periodically discussed various options with team president R.C. Buford.

"He'll coach as long as he wants to coach," Buford said.

Popovich is a three-time NBA Coach of the Year and has won five NBA titles in San Antonio. Entering Friday's game at Minnesota, he ranks third in league history with 1,223 wins. He trails only Hall of Fame coaches Don Nelson (1,335) and Lenny Wilkens (1,332).

The Spurs (26-20) are seeking a 22nd consecutive playoff appearance under Popovich, a remarkable run that began in his first full season as head coach in 1997-98.

On his birthday, he will join Bill Bertka (71), Hubie Brown (71) and Larry Brown (70) as the only head coaches to work into their 70s, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Popovich has committed to spending the next two summers coaching the USA Basketball men's national team at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China and the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.
