Modi and Musk: Catalyzing India-US Tech & Trade Ties

During his US visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tesla CEO Elon Musk to discuss potential collaborations, including Starlink's operations in India and SpaceX-ISRO partnerships. Modi also addressed trade tariff reductions for Tesla's EVs, amid wider discussions to deepen India-US strategic partnerships.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with Tesla's CEO Elon Musk at Blair House in Washington, DC, marking a significant moment in India's international diplomacy.

Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency and accompanied by his children, presented a special gift to Modi before delving into talks possibly addressing Starlink's ambitions in India. Starlink's license is under review by India's Department of Telecommunications; however, the government shows preference for spectrum allocation through administrative channels rather than auctioning.

Indian telecom operators have expressed concerns about the administrative approach, citing fairness issues after acquiring spectrum via expensive bids. To address security apprehensions, Starlink has pledged to store data locally. Discussions may also have extended to collaborations between SpaceX and ISRO, following Musk's statement about Starlink's inactive status in India due to device seizures.

On another front, Musk is lobbying for reduced tariffs on Tesla EVs, aiming to export affordable models to India contingent upon tariff reduction. Prior to meeting Musk, Modi consulted with US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval also present. The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump later, rounding out his inaugural US visit since the latter's second term began.

The delegation, including India’s Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra, underscored India's dedication to strengthening its Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership with the US, a theme reiterated in Modi's departure statement.
