The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has made an urgent appeal to the Sindh government, pushing for swift action to regulate heavy traffic in Karachi. The commission's plea is rooted in the pressing need to counter the escalating frequency of road accidents attributed primarily to careless driving.
Highlighting the hazardous rise in fatalities among pedestrians and cyclists, the HRCP insists on implementing tougher traffic regulations, boosting road safety infrastructure, and launching public awareness initiatives. The agency emphasized the right of Karachi's citizens to peacefully protest the sluggish governmental response to these safety issues, underscoring public safety as a paramount concern.
This call to action resonates amid intensifying public anxiety over heavy traffic threats and deteriorating road conditions. As reported by ARY News, a spike in traffic accidents was observed in Karachi, with 99 major accidents within the initial 37 days of 2025, resulting in 39 deaths. Heavy vehicles predominantly feature in these incidents. Subsequently, Karachi's traffic police responded by issuing 34,655 citations, detaining 490 drivers, and revoking 532 vehicle fitness certifications. A four-member committee was established to investigate the root causes and suggest improvements in road safety. (ANI)
