Teravainen, Canes agree to $27M extension

Forward Teuvo Teravainen and the Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to a five-year, $27 million contract extension, the team announced Monday. The contract will run through the 2023-24 season. The average annual value is $5.4 million.

"Teuvo has improved every year of his NHL career and has established himself as a cornerstone forward for the Hurricanes now and into the future," general manager Don Waddell said. "He has shown that he is capable of adapting and expanding his role with our team, becoming a key penalty killer for (coach Rod Brind'Amour) this season. He's still just 24 years old and we believe he will only continue to grow as a player." Teravainen would have become a restricted free agent next summer.

He ranks second among the Hurricanes in assists (29), points (39) and power-play points (12) this season. The Hurricanes acquired him in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks on June 15, 2016. Since then, he has 145 points (48 goals, 97 assists) in 211 games.

The Blackhawks selected Teravainen with the No. 18 overall pick of the 2012 NHL Draft. In 326 career games, he has 189 points (65 goals, 124 assists). --Field Level Media
