Reports: Nets' Dinwiddie has torn thumb ligament

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie is seeing specialists to determine whether he needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, according to multiple reports Thursday. Former NBA player and current Fox Sports analyst Caron Butler reports Dinwiddie is expected to miss four to six weeks after receiving a second evaluation.

The team announced only that Dinwiddie is being evaluated for a right thumb injury, and more information will be provided once a diagnosis is complete. Dinwiddie is officially listed as questionable for Friday's game against the New York Knicks. It's unclear when Dinwiddie was hurt. He finished Wednesday's game against the Orlando Magic, scoring 29 points in 30 minutes while making 10 of 17 attempts from the field in the 114-110 victory.

The 25-year-old is averaging 17.2 points, 5.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds while playing all 49 games this season. His scoring average is easily on pace for a career high, and the team rewarded Dinwiddie with a three-year, $34 million extension in December. A second-round pick for Detroit in 2014, Dinwiddie joined the Nets in 2016 and has steadily taken a larger role, finishing third last season in voting for Most Improved Player after impressing in the absence of injured guards D'Angelo Russell and Jeremy Lin.

This year, he's a contender in the race for Sixth Man of the Year, having notched 10 games with at least 25 points off the bench, and could draw consideration for the All-Star Game. --Field Level Media
