Iran's Rail Expansion: Linking Neighbors and Easing Returns

Iran is set to strengthen regional connectivity by launching three international rail routes, connecting with Turkey, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan. This ambitious project is aimed at boosting economic integration, as announced by Jabar Ali Zakeri, CEO of Iranian Railways.

A flagship service between Tehran and Ankara is anticipated to build on the existing Tehran-Van line in Turkey. The service is projected to commence in two months, pending financial and fare negotiations. Another route, connecting Tehran and Mashhad with Herat, Afghanistan, awaits resolution of travel document issues.

While these rail initiatives promise to boost regional tourism and trade, Iran is simultaneously addressing the plight of Afghan returnees. The free transportation for deported Afghans is underway, alleviating the challenges they face upon returning. Concerns persist over asset confiscation and financial exploitation by Iranian authorities.
