Penguins ship Brassard, Shehan, picks to Panthers
The Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday sent Derick Brassard, Riley Sheahan and three 2019 draft picks to the Florida Panthers for forwards Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann. The Panthers acquired second- and fourth-round picks from the Penguins, along with the fourth-round pick that originally belonged to the Minnesota Wild.
Brassard, 31, has played in 40 games this season and has 15 points (nine goals, six assists). He is in the final season of a five-year contract he signed in 2014 with the New York Rangers. The Penguins acquired him in a trade with Ottawa last February, and in his career, he has 443 points (171 goals, 272 assists) in 756 regular-season games. Sheahan, 27, has nine points (seven goals, two assists) in 49 games. The Detroit Red Wings made him the No. 21 overall selection of the 2018 NHL Draft and traded him to Pittsburgh at the start of the 2017-18 season. He has played in 414 games and has 139 points (56 goals, 83 assists).
Both players can become unrestricted free agents on July 1. The Panthers took Bjugstad with the No. 19 overall selection in the 2010 NHL Draft. Bjugstad, 26, has 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 32 games on the season. In 394 career games, he 191 points (87 goals, 104 assists). He has two seasons left on his contract.
McCann, a 22-year-old center, was the No. 24 selection of the 2014 NHL Draft by Vancouver, which traded him to the Panthers in 2016. On the season, he has 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists). He 71 points (27 goals, 44 assists) in 212 NHL games. The Penguins are 27-17-6 and in second place in the Metropolitan Division. The Panthers are 20-20-8 and in sixth place in the Atlantic Division.
