IDF Calls for India's Recognition of Hamas as a Terror Group
The Israeli Defence Forces have urged India to recognize Hamas as a terrorist organization, citing shared security concerns. While Hamas is considered a terrorist group by several nations, India has not formally designated it as such despite condemning recent attacks. The October 7 assault by Hamas escalated tensions globally.
The Israeli Defence Forces have publicly appealed for India to officially designate Hamas as a terrorist organization, emphasizing the shared threat both nations face. The call for recognition was made by Lt Col Nadav Shoshani, IDF's International Spokesperson, highlighting the need for a unified stance against common adversaries.
Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist group originating from the Muslim Brotherhood, is seen as a terrorist entity by the US, UK, Canada, and others. Its recent unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023, spurred a major conflict, underscoring the group's capacity for violence and its ideological commitment to armed resistance against Israel.
Over a thousand casualties were reported from the attack, which involved Hamas fighters employing land, air, and sea assaults on Israel. In response, Israel initiated a large-scale military campaign in Gaza, leading to significant destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis. The event has provoked intense international diplomatic engagement and further polarized opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
